Before Steve turned 16, He had been racing in schoolboy grass track competitions from the age of 9. He did achieve something very special that none of his older brothers had not been able to do. He won the 250cc British Championship at age of 15. Steve turned to racing speedway on his 16th birthday. He too had the ability to be a top rider but injuries early on certainly hindered his chances to make a real go of it. His time was short but sweet.
